The Brief

Leading international infrastructure group, Balfour Beatty, engaged Fabrick to achieve a specific objective - highlight our approach to sustainability

The Solution

Fabrick's PR team identified one of Balfour Beatty's most technically challenging projects and created and delivered a programme of technical features to help highlight their approach to sustainability.

At 142 metres high, Guy’s Hospital in Southwark might be dwarfed by its neighbour The Shard, but this towering hospital has been the focus of its own feat of architectural engineering with a complex refurbishment where aesthetics, sustainability and the long-term efficiency of the building were key.

Delivered by Balfour Beatty, the £26 million transformation has seen a staggering 8,000m2 of aluminum cladding panels installed, 5,300m2 of glazing units installed and 34,500m2 of concrete cleaned and repaired.

To help identify specific PR opportunities, Fabrick conducted a site visit to interview key members of the Balfour Beatty team as well as engineers from Arup. A detailed PR plan was then produced, looking at trade press opportunities across different media disciplines such as construction, health, refurbishment and cladding.

With approval from Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust, Fabrick delivered the PR plan, commencing with a site visit.

On completion of the project, Fabrick worked with Balfour Beatty and Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust to arrange a media event to celebrate the successful delivery of the scheme.

The Results

  • 1 Fabrick secured PR features in Construction News, Refurb, Building Products, Health Design and Build and RCI (Roofing, Cladding & Insulation), many of which were drafted by Fabrick’s team of copywriters.

  • 2 The quality coverage secured helped maximise industry awareness of a highly complex project, expertly delivered by the UK’s leading contractor.

  • 3 Identification of angles and opportunities as a direct result of Fabrick’s investigative approach involved a site visit and interview with key stakeholders

  • 4 “We continue to be impressed with the outputs from Fabrick. The professional and knowledgeable manner in which they interact with our Project Managers and key members of staff enables the efficient extract of information to help create compelling copy. Coupled with the excellent relationships they have with the trade media ensures they are a valued partner for the Balfour Beatty communications team.” Head of external communications, Balfour Beatty  Construction Services UK
